Adoption Process & FAQs

Adoptions are done on a first-come, first-served basis and can only be completed in person at our adoption events after having met the animal. You may fill out an application ahead of time to speed up the process, but it does not hold or guarantee any animal.

We do not hold animals under any circumstances. The best way to adopt is to come in person to an event!

Foster Care Policies

When you become a Foster Care Provider, you allow us to rescue more animals. By fostering, you are providing a life-saving service and making a real difference in our community. All fosters must agree to the following:

  • 1Fosters are responsible for the general care of the dog(s), puppy(ies), cat(s) or kitten(s) in their home. This includes, but is not limited to, water, medications (when needed), grooming, exercise, play time, and a safe environment. Petunia's Rescued Friends will provide the food for all foster animals.
  • 2Fosters agree to keep their personal pets' vaccinations current. Fosters may be asked to provide vaccination records to the Foster Manager.
  • 3Fosters need to contact the Foster Manager if a foster animal becomes ill or injured. AUTHORIZATION FOR VET CARE NEEDS TO BE DONE BY THE FOSTER COORDINATOR PRIOR TO ANY APPOINTMENT OR PROCEDURE. Payment for vet care that is done without authorization will be the responsibility of the foster.
  • 4Fosters can participate in the adoption process by bringing their foster animals to our adoption events.
  • 5Fosters should notify the Foster Coordinator as soon as possible if they are not available to attend an adoption event due to illness of the animal or personal reasons beyond their control. If another family member can provide transportation to and from the adoption event, this would be preferable to not attending at all. If the Foster Manager does not hear from the foster, it is expected that the foster animal will be at the adoption event.
  • 6Fosters MAY NOT transfer any foster animal to any other person unless authorized PRIOR to the transfer.
  • 7Fosters MAY NOT promise any foster animal in the program to any potential adopter. It is required that an interested person meet the animal at the adoption event where an application will be taken, as well as a brief interview. The adoption application will be reviewed by the Adoption Manager and, if approved, the adoption process will proceed.
  • 8Only a Petunia's Rescued Friends Intake Manager or Director may authorize the intake of animals from the public or shelter.
  • 9Petunia's Rescued Friends will provide veterinary care for all foster animals. Fosters must be willing to drive to appointments for veterinary care for their foster animals.
  • 10If circumstances develop whereby the foster is unable to give the best care possible, the foster may surrender the animal back to Petunia's Rescued Friends. However, the foster must allow the time and flexibility for Petunia's Rescued Friends to find another foster home.
Onboarding TimelineOur Foster Onboarding Manager will contact you within 7–10 days of your application to discuss the program further.

Volunteering

Volunteers are integral to our day-to-day operations. Our adoption events are predominantly volunteer-based and rely solely on outside help to keep them running. From helping set up events, to walking dogs, to social media support — there's a role for everyone.

Potential volunteers are required to attend an orientation before being allowed to work with the animals. Volunteers under 18 need a parent or guardian's permission.
